Sitting in the English lecture yesterday, delivered by guest lecturer Sylvia Guidara (follow her on Twitter @ digimuve), I could not help but dwell on my fierce resistance in adopting new social media. Sylvia discussed the inevitability of having to embrace mobile devices and social media trends such as Twitter. She went on to encourage us, as future educators, to embrace the wide spread availability of mobile devices. From mobile phones to smartphones, iPads to iPod touches, many, if not all students, have access to such items. It seems slightly ridiculous to overlook the potential of such technology, given its accessibility.
Sylvia has really made me think about how we can use technology to change the way we conduct a class and on a more grand scale, redesign curriculum. She spoke of a blended curriculum that's currently being enacted at a school in Victoria, and the time that it took to work out all the kinks. As it stands though, students are more empowered within the class, as they are able to contribute to the development of the subject through text selection and discussion. I am starting to think that this is the future of education. Using technology to empower students and create a learning culture of accountability. After all, isn't that the point of education?
